Following up on a post we did early in which we discussed the smart side of allowing page rank to flow in your links with do follow tags, we wanted to share a video which a Google webmaster discusses why allowing dofollow commenting can be dangerous. We share this discussion with you for this one main reason, if you do not moderate your blog comments or have some spam fighting techniques, it will not be wise to allow your links to flow page rank.
Also, when you have a comment on your blog, make sure you check the link they is being shared. If the site looks unhealthy in any way, use your discretion to disallow the comment (or simply disallow the links). Comments are important to the value blogs deliver, but it is not worth degrading the value of your website to receive a few extra comments.
Can having dofollow comments on my blog affect its reputation?

Thanks for the article Jeremy – what do you believe are the most effective techniques to fight comment spam? On a blog I have I was getting so much spam I just turned comments off.

I have a number of blogs that get a ton of comments elsewhere. The way we manage the spam is primarily to use some of the various plugins for the CMS we are using. For example, in wordpress, the akismet spam blocker is extremely good at catching many spam additions. I recently also found that this atispam extra plugin could also add some real advantages as well. It really depends on the content management system you are using and how tightly you want the automatic spam blocking to act.

Most spam filters use a scoring system. Each breach has a value. The college the sum of a message’s offenses, the added acceptable a spam clarify will reroute the bulletin (or not delivered at all).
